The Johannesburg Heritage Foundation actively protects the built heritage of our city. We do this by researching the heritage value of places and structures, lobbying for the protection of places of importance, erecting blue plaques, and funding restoration activities. We do, unfortunately, on occasion have to fight battles against well-resourced corporates and institutions of government who should know better, and often win – Imperial and Rand Steam Laundries is a case in point. Our restoration activities are focused on structures in less affluent communities, and we have recently completed work at St Alban’s in Ferreirasdorp, the Lutheran Church in Doornfontein, St Mary the Less in Jeppestown (for its 125th birthday), and at James Mpanza Sofasonke’s House with the lions in Soweto.
